Venture Business Review and Investment
Omar Bakht is the Director of New Ventures and Technology Development at the University of Rochester. Omar’s focus is identifying and developing innovations from the university.
Prior to moving to Rochester in 2013, Omar worked in the technology commercialization space in the Boston area. He has evaluated hundreds of technologies and business plans for market potential while acting as a coach and adviser to his clients. The outcome of his work and advocacy has resulted in secured funding for many scientific and commercial projects. Omar brings a unique understanding of the elements required to commercialize technologies and move toward the goal of capitalization. Having served as Due Diligence chair for Mass Medical Angels, the country's largest life science focused angel investment group, he is uniquely positioned to understand exactly what is required to achieve a successful outcome.
Just a few examples of Omar’s success involve his accomplishments at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, Boston University, and Stony Brook University. While at these institutions, he evaluated and commercialized inventions, ran commercial granting programs totaling >$3 million per year, spun out companies, and managed a $43 million evergreen university venture capital fund. He hopes to create similar systems to facilitate the development of technology at the University of Rochester as well as the Upstate New York area.
Omar has a PhD in Biophysics. His research has led to several peer-reviewed journal articles and a book chapter. He has an MBA with a finance concentration as well. This combination allows Omar to quickly understand the fundamentals of many different technologies and organizations.
